What are stick pack packaging machines?

A stick pack machine is a type of packaging machinery that is designed to produce stick packs, which are long, narrow and tubular packets that are sealed on both ends. Stick packs are commonly used to package single-serve portions of powders, liquids, granules and other products.

Stick packs are commonly used to package single-serve portions of powders, liquids, granules and other products. A stick pack machine is designed to produce small convenient single-use portion packs normally at medium to high throughputs. The stick pack machines are a type of vertical form fill seal machine (VFFS) and instead of producing one pack at a time as traditional VFFS machines do, stick pack machines produce multiple small VFFS packs with each cycle.

A single roll of film mounted on an unwinding station feeds a continuous sheet of packaging film through several tensioning rollers and through a printer bracket where a batch code can be applied to each stick if required. The product is then dispensed into the tube through a filling system and then is sealed at both ends to create a single stick pack. The film continues to the eye mark sensor which detects the printed eye mark on the film and sends a signal to the stick pack machine to dose the product, seal and cut. The sticks are then either collated in batches and into bulk boxes or streamed along conveyors to cartons or other packaging machines.

Different types of stick pack filling machines

The range of Turpack stick pack machines can fill virtually any kind of liquid, granule or powder product into single-use portion packs of most laminate packaging materials. The base forming and sealing part of the machine for all the granulated, powder and liquid stick packaging machines remain the same, it is the filling system that changes to handle each product.

The liquid filling machine can have a few different filling heads depending on the liquid’s characteristics. If the product is thinner, then gravity fillers can be used. However, if the product is more viscous then volumetric systems are used. Liquid stick pack machines are probably the most common form of stick pack machine.

Benefits of a stick pouch packaging machine

The main benefits of stick pack machines are the efficient use of packaging materials, customisable pack sizes usage per dose, speed of output and footprint of the machine.

Stick packs have become an increasingly popular form due to the convenience of the shape and opening mechanisms. Compared to traditional four-sided sachets, a stick pack will use approximately 30% less packaging material. This obviously has substantial financial and environmental benefits. As a stick pack machine is a multi-lane machine the more sticks it will produce per cycle and the machine can produce up to 600 sticks per minute. As most of the functions of the machine are carried out vertically, a stick pack machine has a relatively small footprint compared to its output.  Combining high output, machine size, material savings and the low supervisory requirement of the machines the cost of ownership brings a quick return on investment (ROI).

Our Industries

The best type of stick pack machine for your manufacturing requirements will depend on a few things, including the product being packaged, production volume and the available floor space. Both horizontal and vertical stick pack machines have their advantages and disadvantages. Horizontal stick pack machines are ideal for products that require a longer filling time, such as liquids or gels. They are also suitable for products that require a wider format, as they can produce stick packs with larger widths. However, they require more floor space than vertical stick pack machines.

Vertical stick pack machines are ideal for products that can be filled quickly such as powders of granules. The type of packaging material you want to use is also a factor, as some stick pack machines are better suited to different materials – and whilst stick packs might not seem very environmentally friendly as they are individual packs, compared to sachets they use 30% less packaging material.
